Policy : Balance Speed with Sustainability

Commitment to Sustainable Pace and Responsible Delivery
We believe that moving quickly should never come at the cost of quality, health, or long-term viability. Speed is valuable—but only when it’s sustainable. True agility balances urgency with discipline, enabling teams to deliver at pace without leaving a trail of burnout, brittle systems, or hidden debt.

What This Means
We prioritise working in ways that support both rapid delivery and healthy teams. This means surfacing and tackling tech debt, enabling deep work, balancing operational demands, and never sacrificing culture for deadlines. We value recovery as much as speed.

Our commitment to balancing speed with sustainability is built on:

  • Short-Term Hacks with Recovery Plans – Tactical shortcuts are discouraged unless intentionally followed by recovery work to bring quality back up. Debt is not ignored—it is owned.
  • Visible and Prioritised Tech Debt – Technical debt is tracked, discussed, and factored into planning alongside feature delivery. Teams are supported in reducing debt as part of their remit.
  • Time for Deep Work – Engineers are encouraged to carve out time for uninterrupted problem-solving and system thinking—not just back-to-back delivery tasks.
  • Balanced On-Call and Support Load – Support duties like on-call are shared equitably and planned to minimise fatigue. Teams have space to recover and reflect after operational load.
  • Healthy Continuous Delivery – Fast, frequent delivery is paired with strong testing, observability, and team culture. Continuous delivery does not mean rushed or reactive shipping.

Why This Matters
Sprinting endlessly leads to exhaustion, high turnover, and fragile systems. When speed becomes the only measure, quality suffers and teams lose pride in their craft. By making sustainability a core design principle, we protect the long-term health of both our systems and our people.

Our Expectation
All teams must monitor and manage their delivery pace. This includes tracking team health, factoring in technical debt, and building sustainable flow patterns. Leaders must reinforce the message that healthy teams deliver better—and create space for thoughtful, resilient engineering.

To support this policy, teams will be guided by standards for tech debt management, operational load tracking, and healthy delivery rhythms. By balancing speed with sustainability, we create teams that are fast, focused, and built to last.

Associated Standards

Technical debt is like junk food - easy now, painful later.
