Ragan McGill

Engineering leader building high-performing teams and future-ready platforms through BVSSH-aligned frameworks, measurable standards, and a Centre for Enablement model.

Background

I'm an engineering leader focused on the intersection of strategy, culture, and craft. My work centres on building the conditions for high-performing engineering teams - not by imposing process, but by designing systems that make doing the right thing the easy thing.

Over the years I've led engineering functions through transformation, built Centres of Excellence from the ground up, and developed the frameworks and playbooks on this site to make that work reproducible and measurable. The BVSSH framework - Better, Value, Sooner, Safer, Happier - anchors everything I do, keeping the focus on outcomes that matter rather than activity that looks like progress.

I care deeply about engineering culture: autonomy, psychological safety, continuous learning, and the kind of leadership that gets out of the way when teams are in flow. I also care about the craft itself - quality, observability, sustainable pace, and systems that can be changed with confidence.

This site is a live working document of those ideas - policies, standards, practices, and measures organised into a Centre for Enablement model designed to be adapted, not just adopted.

Seven Sins of Questioning

The questions we ask shape the conversations we have - and the cultures we create. This talk explores seven common questioning anti-patterns that undermine psychological safety, stifle learning, and erode trust in teams. Co-presented with Priya Sinha.
